Am I good enough? Will the want me? Maybe I’ll just skip this year…
These and hundreds of other thoughts race through all of our heads in those moments leading up to the big question. ‘Will my doubles partner want me back again after last year?’ 22 of us were able to muster up the courage and pop the question and they all said ‘yes’!
Fought out over two rounds of 16 holes at Alexander Heights on a modified version of this year’s Perth Open layout, the WA Doubles 2023 saw 22 teams take the course across 5 divisions to see who could claim the swag, bragging rights, and some very cool trophies. In true WA fashion, the wind did its best to make life difficult but the power of teamwork and mate-ship were no match for even the stiffest of sea breezes.
Round one saw some hot scores, with the best coming from Panic! At the Disc Golf (Damon and Pat) who shot a -12 to lead the Pro division by two. Joel and Joey (Joey and Joel) set the pace in Adv/Int with a -9 in a division that saw first and last separated by only 5 strokes.
In Rec/Novice, it was the Fantastic 2 (Matt and Rupert) who fared best, shooting -3 to lead alongside Bogie is the New Birdie (Travis and Adam), who ironically had far more birdies than bogies. In the Mixed division, Team Double Take (Corey and Tania), complete with matching team shirts, shot a solid -3 as well to lead the other two teams by a couple of strokes. Meanwhile in Female, the Ladies of the Flight (Jasmin and Sue) were getting saucery(?) throwing down a +2 in their first round.
Lunch came and went and as the run on cheese sausages at the deli next door slowed, players made their way back out onto the course for round 2. The Biggest Dogs (Blake and Toby), who were barking mad after their slow start, came out with their tails up and shot a massive -14, only missing 2 holes to come out victorious by two strokes over Panic!, who shared second place with former champions (and current Australian doubles champs) The Artist Formerly Known as the Berg Boys (Alex and Connor).
In Adv/Int, as if from nowhere, From the Mud (John and Sean) who had been sitting in last place at half way threw down a massive -11 second round to force an unexpected playoff with Joel and Joey. Not only had they come from way back, but John had been scoring through UDIsc on his phone so their score didn’t upload until they finished their round. Two holes later and the boys from the mud had completed the comeback taking out the playoff.
The Fantastic 2 went from strength to strengthen Rec/Novice, improving on their round 1 score by a stroke to end up running away with a 3 stroke win over Bogie is the New Birdie. It was a similar story in Mixed, with Team Double Take going two better to finish on -8 overall and win by eight. The Ladies of the Flight also went one better in the second round, finishing up with a very solid +3 for the day.
Well done to everyone who took part, the day was played in good spirits and it seemed like a lot of fun was had. We can’t wait to see you all back for some more doubles in 2024 wherever that may be!
